Jammu, February 03: Close to the recent episode where the son of a terrorist who was hanged for attacking Parliament secured 95 percent marks we have a nationalist martyr’s son who belongs to poor of the poorest families securing 92% marks in 10th standard from a government school of Pancheri area.
Sunak Singh son of Late Gopal Singh resident of Upper Galiote Ori has proved all theories wrong that only the students of top schools and well to do families excel in studies that too when his father, a VDC member, was martyred by terrorists on 29 November 2001.
Sunak Singh the student of a remote government school secured 458/500 marks in 10th class, the result of which was declared yesterday.
The boy who has made Jammuites proud needs not only our appreciation but commitment that he would not face any financial problems in future to lead a successful life.
While everyone needs to come out with praises and appreciation he also needs to be brought out of the poverty circle lest he becomes history.
We must also learn something from Kahsmiris who went out of the way to support and highlight the son of a militant for securing 95 percent marks and it is now the turn of Jammuites to come out in support of the boy who has already sacrificed his father for the nation.
The SP Smart Group of schools meanwhile offers to adopt the student if he wants to come to Jammu for further studies and would be provided education free of cost and ensured a better future.
However our leadership also needs to come to the rescue of the family to take them out of the poverty and provide immediate financial and other help to send a message to the student community that bright students had no dearth of opportunities and must not be let down for the want of opportunities and fiancés.
Sunak should be the next icon of academic excellence for Jammuites and be felicitated for his feat.
Sunak’s father Gopal Singh was a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member fighting the terrorists in his area.
Agencies add: He attained martyrdom on 29th November 2001 in a brutal massacre of seven persons including 4 VDC members by 12 HM terrorist at Chakka Ghanaan Upper Galiote, Pancheri, district Udhampur.
Just before receiving bursts, valiant Gopal Singh had asked the dreaded HM militants and their commanders to raise their hands and show identity cards but subsequently was taken in as the terrorists posed themselves as police personnel in uniform deployed in connection with security of Sawlakote Hydroelectric Project.
No one knew that after one and half decade Gopal Singh will again become talk of the town because of the great academic excellence of his son Sunak Singh who although couldn’t get an opportunity to pursue studies in reputed private academies or on tuition centers, yet studied with devotion in Govt HSS Damnote, a remote Govt School with meager educational facilities.
Let’s put our weight behind this boy and make him a true icon for making Jammuites proud.
