Jammu, August 6: It was on this day seventy years ago that world saw the first and fortunately till now last use of nuclear weapons directly on mankind the scars of which are yet to heal and the incident still sends shivers down the spine of the human beings.
It was on August 6, 1945 that United States dropped an atom bomb on Hiroshima city of Japan making the first use of a nuclear weapon, some 70,000–80,000 people, of whom 20,000 were soldiers, or around 30% of the populations of Hiroshima were killed by the blast and resultant firestorm and another 70,000 injured.
The atomic bomb known as Little Boy containing about 64 kg (141 lb) of uranium-235 took 44.4 seconds to fall from the aircraft flying at about 31,000 feet (9,400 m) to a detonation height of about 1,900 feet (580 m) above the city.
The world is still reminded of the horrors of war & their effect on humanity as said by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while paying tributes to the people who lost their lives during the bombings.
He said that world must get together to create a violence free world a sentiment reciprocated by his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.
In a message on the anniversary of the bombing on the Japanese city, he emphasised that solutions to problems of humanity lie in peace and progress.
“Solution to problems of humanity lie in peace & progress. Let us walk shoulder to shoulder to create a peaceful world, free from violence,” Modi said.
Hank F. Miller Jr. an American author and a former resident of Gloucester City NJ who now lives in Kitakyushu City, Japan while describing the Hiroshima bombings refers to “A Mothers Lullaby” being taught in Japanese schools to explain the tragedy that hit the people of Japan.
This day reminds us that we need to rethink over the insane race for nuclear arms which only threatens to wipe out the mankind from the globe over trifle issues only to be regretted later on…
